Which do you pick, and why?
Or do you just wait for the C8? Or,
what other ONE new car/truck
do you buy with ~$60k?
I think I’d have to go GT350... Even though it’s “just” a Mustang, the design of the S550
always catches my eye and I’d never get tired of listening to it (and I can actually get all 3 kids into it). Never had
been a “Mustang guy” prior to this generation. Definitely lust more after Porsches, in general, and current ride is an E90 M3 (which I love).
C&D just did a comparison test of these four and ranked them:
(spoilers below)
4 - M2 Competition
3 - 718 Cayman
2 - Supra
1 - GT350

If its my sole car, the GT350 all day. I saw one in traffic the other day and was reminded how good they look and sound. Plus being able to put at least one kid in it is a big benefit

C8 every day of the week and twice on track day.
... but I’m a Corvette guy with no kids ;)

Can’t argue with that. It’s going to be a world beater.
Looking forward to the first independent tests.

Really is a classic design. Even the base models catch my eye. Great lines.
Yeah, I continue to watch the prices of the old ones as they depreciate. I wouldn’t be surprised if one of these ends up in my garage at some point.
Hopefully the long-term reliability proves to be pretty good (oil consumption alone isn’t going to scare me off, but always wondered what the extra vibration of the flat-plane crank would mean for the longevity of all the connected parts).

I pick the Mustang. EPA says 21 highway which is good enough for me. Plus it’s a bit bigger than the other 3 so you actually have space for more than 1 overnight bag.

Voted with my wallet. I look forward to my C8 delivery around spring. The mustang would make a considerable case if I didn’t already have my foxbody which has been stripped out and modified . The noises it makes would give even that 350 a long run for its money.

gt350 because of the analog nature of the high raving na v8 with manual. it’s clearly the most dangerous as it makes you drive it to stay alive...just my take. i understand people choosing any other of the four cars though. it’s a great group

Aside from the wonky opening, it will be fine. Especially since you can put the rear seats down.

I’m really looking forward to them as well!
Again, as a Vette fan I am nervous for the tests, haha, because it has been hyped so much. It all SHOULD be pretty killer, based on the specs, but I am a little worried about the transmission, since that’s unproven.
Hopefully they don’t start on fire sitting in traffic like other mid-engined cars out there, haha

Thanks, I think it serves the right balance of flying under the radar and pop of color. If they had a really dark blue I might have gone with that. It also gives me some motivation to get the mustang wrapped so I don’t have 2 red cars at the same time. Interestingly enough, while I am waiting for the Corvette my brother has been looking around for his dream boxster. I have a feeling that by the time he gets it I will be taking delivery of the C8. Then I can perform a similar comparison myself.

718 or wait for C8.

I would absolutely love an older Cayman S, but the current 718 just doesn’t do it for me. The combination of the turbo 4 and the design changes have really just left me flat.

I prefer the new design.
The noise of the 718 GTS I drove grew on me. I also loved the midrange. Yeah, the 981 had the flat six howl, but you’re only going to have so much torque with 3.4 liters. And the 2.7 is just plain slow.
The GTS has as much peak torque as my 997 X51, but it’s such a nice meaty curve. I like accessible performance (read: turbos) these days.
Honestly I’d rather have a 2 liter 718 than a 981 GTS. That’s how punchy the new engines are. Paired with PDK it’s damn near lag free
(Yes I realize the irony of my name, while espousing my love of PDK. I’m getting old)

Very hard to argue with the power/performance, that’s for sure.

I hate the Ford interior but hands down a GT350 buyer if I were forced to replace my weekend/track/fun car with one of these four.
The M2 and Cayman are fantastic cars, but it is that extra personality and wrongness that make a car special. Supra - needs an MT.

As far as the other cars go, my coworker has an M2 and I wasn’t a fan of it, I don’t fit comfortably in Z4's, and Shelby is beautiful and sounds amazing but it’s a porker and the visibility is turrible . It also drinks a quart of oil every 500 miles which is ludicrous.
The 718 is comfortable, practical and easy and fun to drive at any speed.
The C8 just looks too good on paper to ignore.

What specifically about the M2 didn’t you like?
Saracen

It’s been a long time since I’d driven a road car with more road and tire noise than the M2. It makes a 997 seem quiet on the highway. And the noise resonated. It was terrible. I dunno how my coworker drives it every day. I was fed up after 15 minutes behind the wheel. I think they took out way too much insulation.
If it were me, I’d go with an M240i.

I like the looks, but since the back seat’s basically unusable, it’s really a moot point for me. I either need something in which
the kids can actually
fit in the back, or I might as well just get a true 2-seater.
Saracen

Yeah, that’s another thing. The back seats are pretty much useless with those huge, aggressive front seats. It’s supposed to be a four seater coupe, not a 2+2 like a 911. The Cayman is more practical IMO.

Isn’t it crazy? There’s no way you would’ve considered a Mustang before this GT350, right?

Agreed - I am a fan of the new body style and the engine is just divine. Now if I could special order one in bullit green, no stripes, debad ged... Also very OK with the avalanche grey.

Name checks out.
Would you choose a 718 Cayman S, or the older flat 6 version?
